Konbanwa, minna-san! I'm back. Yare yare desu ne... one more day of my "vacation." I'm "on vacation" because I don't really get stressed... and I'm only earning a token salary. Quite fun, tho. That's why it's a vacation. :-) Not a bad day, all things considered. I just had lunch today with the love of my life, and that's good cos I only get to see him on weekends.

This morning, I was able to introduce my semi-permanent student, Shin Ae, to the pleasures of blueberry jelly-smothered Dewberry cookies. Sugar Addicts of the World, welcome Shin Ae into our coven! (punch-drunk maniacal laughter in the background)

Speaking of food, the other week, I got quite offended by this student's observation that Filipino food is sweet, and that in Korea, they don't usually give sweets to their children except on holidays. On the other hand, this was a thirtysomething mother of two toddlers I was talking to, so that probably explains why she was so concerned that Filipino food (even our milk, for the love of Mike!) was spoiling her babies' taste buds. I was mollified when a coworker of mine pointed out something... Indonesian food is worse in the sugar department. He heh. But hey, I offer the standard advice for beating temptation.... Give In!!!

And so, today, I performed my duty as a dues-paying, card-carrying member of Sugar Addicts International and initiated my unsuspecting pupil into the wonders of sugar addiction. She wasn't complaining. In fact, she was positively grateful. Such a polite girl. Kept apologizing before asking if she could have some more. And before you berate me for neglecting my duties as hostess of the pica-pica party, I have to say I DID slide the cookie tray closer to her before I commenced getting my own sugar fix. Which raises the interesting question of whether moving a container of food closer to someone is enough of an invitation for them to help themselves, or whether this is purely a Filipino thing, or simply, whether I'm just too darn lazy in the morning.

Whatever it is, one thing is undoubtedly settled: I am never going back to this net cafe again. My ears are bleeding from all the novelty songs. Not that they wouldn't be a tad interesting if you happened to be stuck on Mars with wheelbarrowfuls of rust for company, but it would be nice to have edifying music once in a while. Moronic lyrics that sound simultaneously suggestive and revolting just don't cut it for me.

And so, boys and girls, the lesson for this day is that, please, if there's something worse that having no music in your soul, it's filling it up with JUNK music (goes for many things, I suppose). If you feel too down about junk music and the effing permanent position it seems to occupy in your life, or about something else, there's always sugar to comfort you... unless you need to be comforted due to the fact that years of having way too much sugar have already taken their toll.

Ja, ne!
